Meet Sydney Walker

A Lifelong Canyon County Resident Dedicated to Serving Families with Compassion and Professionalism.

I was born and raised right here in Nampa, Idaho and I am proud to call Canyon County home. Community service and involvement has been modeled to me from a young age. My grandma, Helen Bernal  was a Community Service Officer for Caldwell Police for 20+ years. She included me in various volunteer events in the Caldwell community in my childhood and subjected me to being the Crime Dog McGruff plenty of times.

I graduated from Nampa Senior High School, where I was involved in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). I went on to attend the College of Western Idaho, studying Surgical Technology, and worked in several ambulatory surgery centers as a surgical technician, gaining hands-on medical experience in high-pressure, detail-driven environments.

In 2021, I began working at Envision Sight, Idaho’s only eye bank and one of approximately 70 globally. I started as a Recovery Technician, where I had the privilege of working with donors and their families and helping our mission of restoring sight.

Through this work, I saw firsthand the incredible sacrifices donors and their families make so that others may see again. Supporting families during those moments deeply impacted me and ultimately led me to serve decedents more directly.

That calling led me to serve as a Senior Deputy Coroner for Canyon County for nearly three years. During that time, I worked closely with first responders, law enforcement, and our community while investigating deaths and supporting families. I developed a strong passion for prevention efforts, particularly surrounding drug overdose fatalities, as our community began facing the growing fentanyl crisis. I implemented the ODMAP software after attending a fentanyl course put on by the DEA. This software increased communication and tracking of non fatal and fatal overdoses within the Treasure Valley area bridging EMS, Fire and the Coroner's office to track trends. During my time there I also got to mentor and train new deputy coroners, high school and college interns.

Today, I serve as the Technical Director for Envision Sight, where I oversee budget operations, compliance, and quality standards at Idaho’s only eye bank. In this role, I review complex medical records to determine donor eligibility, ensuring strict adherence to FDA regulations and national accreditation standards. I have implemented quality assurance measures that meet these standards and have contributed to maintaining zero site violations during recent inspection periods.

My work also involves data analysis and operational oversight, identifying trends, improving processes, and ensuring accountability across all areas of tissue recovery and distribution. In addition, I have experience with financial oversight in a nonprofit setting, including reviewing budgets, grant writing, analyzing profit and loss (P&L), and ensuring responsible, transparent use of resources. Our budget is currently twice the size of the Canyon County Coroners Office.

I continue to stay active in the medicolegal field and hold my ABMDI certification (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators), along with memberships in professional organizations including the American Association of Suicidology and the Society of Medicolegal Death Investigators (SOMDI). I'm also a private contractor where I support medicolegal death investigation operations nationwide. This experience allows me to collaborate with multiple government jurisdictions across the USA, adapt to different investigative systems, and further strengthen my ability to conduct thorough, accurate, and professional death investigations in various jurisdictions.

I am a Boise State alumni, an accredited institution, in Public Health and Nonprofit Management. My capstone project focused on designing a Mobile Integrated Health program that connects coroners, EMS, fire departments, and public health agencies to better identify patterns in death and implement prevention efforts across the Treasure Valley.

Outside of my professional life, I am a mom of two boys and the proud wife of a Caldwell firefighter. Our family enjoys spending time outdoors, serving our community, staying active, and attending MLB games together. We are Caldwell Lions and proudly stand by "when there is a need, there is a lion" and are proud to model that to our children.

Canyon County is home  and serving this community is something I care deeply about.
